King & Meakins
“People really appreciate the fact that we do an honest, good job.”
King and Meakin is a family business, established in 1973. People see the shop front, but the main part of our business is our garage, which is a bit hidden. And to be honest half the people who live in Wolverton probably don’t even know that we’re there!
Our Dad* and Uncle were originally Aston Martin workers and they set up their own garage, just doing Aston Martins to start with. That’s how it started, but it soon moved on to normal cars. And now it’s anything and everything.
The shop started as just a car shop – accessories and spares. Then we added bikes and general bike parts and accessories. We do bike repairs as well. And when it snows we always make sure we carry a lot of sledges!
People travel from all parts of Milton Keynes to come to us. And we do everything. Service, MOTs, exhausts, tyres. The lot, really. It’s all built from word of mouth. Which is amazing really, because people are coming for the right reasons then; because we’re honest, reliable, and reasonably priced.
We have a regular base of customers, and we do families’ cars… like the mum, the dad, the daughter… you know. We have lots of generations! And there’s families we’ve been seeing since the eighties. But we get new customers as well.
Customers like that they deal directly with us – the people working on the cars. You don’t speak with just the receptionist while your car disappears in the wilderness out the back. Most of our jobs are in in the morning and out at night. We hardly keep any in overnight; they’re all done on the spot. And I think people really appreciate the fact that we do an honest, good job. And that’s what we try and do.
*Unfortunately, since our interview Richard King has sadly passed away. The business continues to run as usual. He will be remembered fondly in Wolverton.
